Church of Immaculate Conception, Kanhei, Gurugram
(A Parish of the Archdiocese of Delhi)
The Kanhei Mission was established in 1930 by English Capuchin Friars from St. Mary’s Church, Old Delhi, who visited the region for pastoral ministry. Over time, a small chapel was built to serve the growing Catholic community. Initially, the priest in charge resided at St. Michael’s Church, New Colony, Gurgaon, while tending to the spiritual needs of Catholics in Kanhei.
With the support of the Christian Children’s Fund (CCF), several social programs were introduced, including the establishment of a primary school for village children.
Growth & Development
In 1969, the Prabhudasi Sisters (PSA) were invited to Kanhei, and the Nirmala Health and Maternity Center was inaugurated under their administration. Around the same time, the priest in charge began residing in Kanhei, and the Bal Kalyan Kendra was established to support various social welfare initiatives for the villagers. Special emphasis was placed on women’s empowerment and self-reliance programs.
From 1993 onward, several new Catholic families began settling in areas like Sushant Lok and Maruti Vihar, contributing to the expansion of the parish.
Construction of the New Church
With the steady growth of the Catholic community, the construction of a new church and rectory began in 2001. On November 9, 2003, the Church of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady was inaugurated by His Grace Vincent M. Concessao, Archbishop of Delhi.
In 2011, the Church of the Holy Name in Sector-55 was bifurcated from the Parish of Immaculate Conception.
Renovations & Expansions
The church sanctuary was renovated and blessed on March 19, 2016, by His Grace Anil J T Couto.
A new Adoration Chapel was built and inaugurated on February 7, 2020.
